Scholarships FAQ
getting started
Who is eligible to apply for scholarships?
Students of Fayetteville Public Schools are eligible to apply for scholarships. Most scholarships are available to graduating FHS seniors, though specific eligibility requirements can be found in each scholarship’s guidelines.
Can non-traditional or adult students apply for scholarships?
The only scholarship currently available to adult students is the Marty Thurlby DeWeese Study Abroad Scholarship. Applicants must be graduates of FHS to be eligible.
How do I apply for a scholarship?
Visit our Scholarships page to explore available opportunities and determine which scholarship best fits your qualifications and goals. Each scholarship includes a link to its online application.
What documents are typically required in a scholarship application?
Requirements vary by scholarship. Some scholarships require transcripts, and most require at least one letter of recommendation. Specific application requirements can be found in each scholarship’s guidelines.
Do I need letters of recommendation, and who should write them?
Most scholarships require letters of recommendation. The only exception is the FHS Girls Basketball DOG Award. Recommendation letters should typically come from teachers, counselors, coaches, employers, or other individuals who can speak to your character, achievements, and potential.
Can I apply for multiple scholarships at the same time?
Yes. Students are encouraged to apply for multiple scholarships, provided they meet the eligibility requirements for each opportunity.
FUNDING
How much money can I receive from a scholarship?
Award amounts vary by scholarship. Please visit our Scholarships page for specific funding amounts and eligibility details.
Can scholarship funds be used for expenses other than tuition?
Scholarship fund usage varies by scholarship. Some awards may be limited to tuition and educational expenses, while others allow broader use. Specific details can be found in each scholarship’s guidelines.
What happens to my scholarship if I change schools or majors?
Scholarship funds are sent directly to the recipient’s institution after awards are finalized. If you change institutions, you should work directly with the Treasurer’s Office or Financial Aid Office at your institution to manage the transfer or application of funds.
Can I lose my scholarship after receiving it?
No.
Will receiving a scholarship affect my financial aid package?
Scholarships may impact a student’s financial aid package depending on the policies of their institution. Students are encouraged to contact their college or university’s Financial Aid Office for guidance.
after you apply
How will I know if I received the scholarship?
Applicants will be notified by email regarding whether their application was approved or declined.
How long does it take to find out if I was selected?
Scholarship review committees typically take approximately one month after the application deadline to review applications and select recipients.
What happens if I am not selected — can I reapply next year?
Most scholarships are only available to graduating seniors and therefore cannot be reapplied for after graduation. The Marty Thurlby DeWeese Scholarship remains available to eligible Fayetteville Public Schools graduates.
How and when will the scholarship funds be disbursed?
After recipients are notified of their award, they will complete a Google Form providing information about themselves and their institution. Once FPEF staff received details from all recipients, FPEF staff will then mail the scholarship check directly to the institution’s Treasurer’s Office or Financial Aid Office. Once funds are mailed, recipients should contact their institution directly to confirm receipt and application of the funds.
Are there any reporting or academic requirements to maintain my scholarship?
Scholarship recipients are required to submit a thank-you letter addressed to the donor. Letters may be mailed to the FPEF office or submitted electronically for staff to forward to donors.
Recipients are also expected to attend the annual Celebration of Excellence event in April, where scholarship recipients are publicly recognized. Additional participation details will be shared directly with recipients.
