Don Deweese is no stranger to education.
He is not only a graduate of FHS but retired after 34 years of employment as a teacher, librarian, and district library supervisor with the Fayetteville Public Schools. However, what is most dear to his heart is his wife, Marty Thurlby Deweese, and her dedication to foreign language. In 1985, a fund was established in her honor to help FHS students travel abroad. After her passing in 1987, family and friends grew the fund and established the Marty Thurlby Deweese Study Abroad Grant in her memory.
The vision for the scholarship is to encourage: the study of foreign language, the exploration of other cultures, understanding of other peoples, awareness of ourselves as world citizens, and foreign travel. Since the scholarship’s inception over forty FHS students have been provided the opportunity to travel around the world to places ranging from Italy to South Africa to Japan. Each scholar has been exposed to a new language, tradition, and culture; experiences that will last a lifetime.
